Midsummer Maple League: Roman Runner

Midsummer is here!! Maple League action is on a small break, so I decided to catch up with a few of the stars of the league and ask some important questions. Here is Roman Runner of the Turku Trojans had to say.

The Roman Runner Story

“I’ve been playing football all my life for every year since I was old enough to play. After high school, I went to the most decorated junior college in the nation( City College of San Francisco) where we won a national championship. Then I transferred to the University of Idaho for the following 2 years. One day, after countless hours of training to reach the ultimate goal of the NFL and not getting there, I got a phone call. It was a weird European phone number. They asked me if I wanted to come to Finland to play ball. Of course I accepted, I had no other leads besides arena football; I didn’t want to convert to that style of football. I still don’t. Now this is my 3rd year here(Finland).”

Perfect: How do you like it in Finland?

Runner: Honestly, Finland has grown on me. I never considered living here, but i do like to visit. Northern California summers are great, but violent; Especially in the cities I lived in. It’s nice to be around a safe and peaceful environment. That’s what attracts me to Finland. The peace, and a functional system that is not corrupted.

Perfect: How do you like the Finnish People?

Runner: They’re cool, way different from back home, they’re shy as hell, but when they open up it’s all love. Also every time I come back here, I have to remember to adjust my attitude and not be so aggressive with my vocabulary; I’m sure you know what I mean. For the most part I have had very few altercations. It’s been mostly love here. And Scandinavian women are beautiful.

Perfect: What is your go to meal in Finland?

Runner: I eat a lot of chicken, rice and veggies. I try to keep it American as much as possible, because I cook a lot. But I love the pastries here.

Perfect: What are your midsummer plans?

Runner: Probably just take a cruise to Sweden. Not 100 percent on that yet.

Perfect: What do you see as the end result for you guys(Trojans) this season?

Runner: With our new revamped offense, I don’t see why we can’t win it all. We do have the most talent in this league. But with our new additions and adjustments, we will catch up(in the Maple League).

Perfect: Individually how do you feel about your performance so far?

Runner: I think I’ve been playing good as a versatile utility player. Last game I played corner the whole game, that was a tough challenge. But overall I’ve done what has been expected of me.

Perfect: What changes if any do you guys(Trojans) need to make to improve?

Runner: Simple, We need to stop the penalties, It’s killing us. Making bigger plays on special teams. Taking the ball away more. Stop the oppositions 3rd down conversation.

Perfect: Can you name the best 5 players in the Maple League?

Runner: Like I said we have the most talent.

Chris Douglas (Turku)

Karri Kuuttila (Turku)

James Perrineau (Turku)

Sami Toivonen (Turku)

Micah Brown (Roosters)

But watch out for Max Shortell,(Turku) once he gets things in motion. Going to be nice to watch.

Life After Football

Perfect: So what’s next for you after this season is over?

Runner: Me and my brother are going to get a place in San Francisco. Hopefully  I’ll be taking up a coaching job at my old junior college, as well as working a side job. Build up my credit, invest in commercial real estate or residential depending on what we find. Then it’s all a business and numbers game from there.
