The Porvoon Butchers Ground the Hämeenlinna Huskies Air Raid

The Porvoon Butchers beat the Hämeenlinna Huskies 19-8 in the eight week of Maple League play. 225 yards of total offense is not typical of an air raid offense, but that’s what the Hämeenlinna Huskies had on Saturday against a tough Porvoon Butchers defense. As I watched the game, I constantly felt myself wanting to find fault in what the Huskies were doing on offense, but that would be short changing this Butchers defense. Along with a dedicated run game on offense, the Butchers were in control of this game from start to finish.

WELCOME BACK RICKEY STEVENS

Fresh from Poland, Rickey Stevens wasted no time gaining the approval of his Finnish teammates. With 170 yards on 34 attempts and a touchdown, Stevens did more than his share to help the Butchers win this game.

SOMEBODY GUARD DANIEL LUOMA!!

4 catches, 60 yards, 2 touchdowns. Not bad considering the Butchers quarterback only completed 8 total passes. Huskies Defensive back Mikko Isokääntä was tasked with guarding wide receiver Daniel Luoma, and he never successfully did so. Luoma would have easily had two more touchdowns for another 60 yards if quarterback Sebastian Berndtsson were a more accurate passer. He was not just open, he was wide-ass open!

DON’T BLAME THE DEFENSE

The Huskies defense played great, despite their offense playing dead. The Hämeenlinna Huskies defense gave up a total of 263 yards of offense, forced 2 turnovers, and held the Butchers offense to 2 of 6 in the redzone, including two goal line stops. 19 points could easily have been 30 if this defense had not played so well. If there is one positive the Huskies can take away from this game is that the defense is solid.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS, AND TOUGH GAMES

I really wanted to find one player on the Butchers defense with gaudy stats, but that was impossible because the ENTIRE defense was so good. Huskies Head Coach Stan Bedwell threw the kitchen sink at the Butchers defense and they threw it back! Every play the Huskies offense ran, the Butchers were there. Not with awesome highlight plays, but with sound fundamentals. Linebacker Troy Roach was very active, leading all players with 6.5 tackles. I honestly should name every player on the defense for making plays when their number was called.  There was no one standout because there were so many different ways the Huskies attacked, and the entire defense responded instead every time. This defense is one of the best in the league so far.
