Jyväskylä Jaguaarit vs Kouvola Indians: A tragedy in Kuusankoski

So I decided to watch a local American football game in the neighboring town of Kuusankoski today, which is where the Kouvola Indians play in Division 1 of the Finnish American Football League. Boy was I surprised by what I witnessed! I won’t waste your time with a long detailed post, so here are the highlights only.

1- Kuusankoski has some shady shit going on

The Indians were obviously outmatched in this game, but the home team referees took it upon themselves to try to even the playing field. The amount of bad calls in this game were way to high for me to count, but the majority were against the visiting team at just the right moments to kill drives and negate big plays. Yea, that’s not suspicious at all. Also if you play for the Jyväskylä Jaguaarit I feel for your stats this week, as the announcer of the game stated several times “Do not be mad if your team’s stats are incorrect, that’s your fault for those jerseys.” Honestly the  Jaguaarit uniform choice was strange, but the numbers were more than legible. To blatantly not want to keep stats for the opposing team is beyond unsportsmanlike and I expected better from Division 1 team.

2- Both Jaguaarit and the Indians could do better

Considering the score was 21-6 at half I expected a complete route for the second half. A confident, well tuned team would have put their feet on the gas and closed this game out. Jaguaarit did not, they changed their offensive philosophy during the second half and tried to give backups playing time. In doing so they put their defense on the field more than needed resulting in the Indians making the game look interesting at one point when the score was 27-12 after three quarters. Even though Jaguaarit scored 49 points total, they had to work much harder because of a bad third quarter. If they get it together Jaguaarit could be a good team this season, their defense was consistent and made plays all game.

Indians had 20 players, that should be the biggest issue the team faces all year is fielding a full team. Despite the small number of players they never stopped fighting even being properly outplayed all game. If other American import arrives and helps put up a decent amount of offense the Indians could shake things up in the league. If the other American doesn’t make a big enough change it will be a long losing season for the Indians.

3 – Hyvää Charles Wort !!!

This English-American (born in the United Kingdom, raised in the states) played his butt off today. As a Receiver, Linebacker, Safety, & Returner, Charles kept his team competitive and optimistic throughout the game. When he was finally pulled from the game late in the fourth quarter, the Indians defense collapsed and let the Jaguaarit run the ball consecutively down field for 80 yards for their last score of the game. Right now this guy IS the Kouvola Indians, I don’t know if they could stop a runny nose without him.

Their were lots of other things that happened in this game, but honestly it’s not worth the read, so if I didnt say already Jyvaskula Jaguars defeated the Kouvola Indians 49-20 today and it was an ugly sight to watch. Since I live in Kouvola I will probably be watching many of these ugly games, because I love football and will watch whenever I have the chance.
